Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) has been incorporated pursuant to reform in Electricity and unbundling of Gujarat Electricity Board. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd is holding company of other 6 functional entities (i.e. One – Generation, One – Transmission, four- Distribution companies) formed pursuant to unbundling. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) is a Government of Gujarat Company registered under Company Act 1956 and functional from 1st April, 2005.

Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd is entrusted the responsibility of procuring bulk power and supplying power to State distribution licensee. Further, GUVNL is also engaged in activity of Trading of Power and is member in Power Exchange India Ltd and Indian Energy Exchange. Besides GUVNL is also coordinating and facilitating activities of its six subsidiary companies for holistic development of power sector in the State.

GUVNL is bulk buyer in the State who is supplying bulk power to its subsidiary distribution companies. GUVNL is tying up power from the sources like Central Sector Generating Stations, Independent Power Producers, Captive Power Producers, Renewable Sources, Own Generating Subsidiary Company for onward supply to its distribution companies. Present installed capacity of the State is 12,854 MW from conventional sources and 1912 MW from Renewable sources.

GUVNL’s total turnover was Rs 17435 Crores and profit before tax of all group companies was 385 Crores in FY 2009-10.
